OneTwo Claudia Brucken with Paul Humphreys
07/2004 (c) Stephen Blotner
It's a fact that collecting obscure music or
rare-track can be hell. For some years I've
contacted people worldwide, strained to read
fine-print magazine ads, bought overpriced CD's,
and collected remixes and trades to hear many
songs and related obscure tracks from a favorite
band (and possibly one of yours): Depeche Mode.

^ 1985 ^
Propaganda released the immortal A Secret
Wish; a fan favourite and it is of note
that some synthpop forums list this as the
All-time best, All-time number one release from
any pop related/alternative record. Justifiably
so. Now, we may consider the friendship between
musician/songwriter Martin L. Gore and Claudia
Brucken, Propaganda singer A Secret
Wish and 12 releases. (Martin Gore is
said to be good friends with Genesis P-Orridge -
Psychic TV/Throbbing Gristle member - though it
seems the pair have never collaborated).
Propaganda, with members Suzanne Freytag, and
Michael Mertens (no Ralf Dorper this time),
collaborated on the infamous session in 1999/2000
which yielded new songs and a song that was
incomplete until Brucken brought the track
Cloud Nine to Martin Gore. Gore in
turn added lyrics to the bridge and contributed
his unmistakable guitar work to parts of the
song. There may exist numerous versions of
Cloud Nine and a group of songs as a
studio demo with Cloud Nine was sent
to a number of record labels (sadly with no
result).

^ 2004 ^
After a brief tour several years ago with Paul
Humphreys (Orchestral Maneuvers In the Dark) and
Claudia Brucken things were silent for a bit (the
tour featured her songs from Propaganda and a new
track Cloud Nine as well as OMD
favourites). Brucken and Humphreys contributed a
track This is not America (David
Bowie/Pat Methany) for a compilation that to date
has not surfaced. Claudia (once part of the band
ACT) again collaborated with Andrew Poppy for a
set of cover songs, acoustic piano and voice
(ANOTHER LANGUAGE, released 2005). Propaganda
again disbanded (the last release - 1 2 3 4 did
not feature Claudia), and work commenced on a
project and album featuring Claudia.

The previous studio session from Propaganda
yielded an interesting demo, and several terrific
tracks were recorded. Certain songs
(Anonymous, Beast Within)
are better than others and Dream within a
Dream, a re-recording, seems inferior to
the original (the song is based on a poem Edgar
Allan Poe.)
Brucken and Humphreys have released the e.p.
OneTwo ITEM that includes an excellent,
Kraftwerk-influenced track "Signals and a
new version of Cloud Nine. The e.p.
features a great synthpop version of Cloud
Nine, though sadly the mix has only the
Martin Gore guitar. On the earlier version, it
seems to my ears that the Propaganda demo/studio
recording features Gore singing harmony for the
chorus (excluded on this release).
Additionally it is said there were numerous,
alternate versions of Cloud Nine and
one may suspect a single would have followed if
Propaganda had persevered and found a record
label to complete and release their newer studio
work.
As I've stated before, it seems that collecting
can be hell.
